Baby prams have a history of more than 350 years. Baby prams have come a long way since then undergoing many changes in its design and features, though the basic features remain the same.

In 1733, when the Duke of Devonshire asked William Kent who was well known as landscape architect and furniture designer, he came up with a shell shaped basket on wheels that the children could sit in. This was decorated in a classic style and meant to be pulled by a goat.

By 1840, the baby carriage became extremely popular and Queen Victoria bought three carriages from Hitchings Baby Store. The baby prams of those days had several interesting features. Those were specially hand-made with the finest wood or wicker, held together by expensive brass joints, designed carefully with more importance to details, decorated with ornaments along with finest chosen fabrics and were luxurious.

In 1883, William Richardson patented his idea of reversible stroller with some structural changes to the carriage. The stroller was design so it could face out or in towards the parent. His design increased maneuverability of the baby prams. With the advancement of time, baby prams became more and more cheap and the number of features increased. Features like breaks, deeper prams, larger wheels were added. These features gave more stability and safety.

In 1965, Owen Maclaren, an aeronautical engineer found that the typical baby prams are heavy and using the knowledge of aeroplanes, Maclaren designed a stroller with an aluminum frame. This was the first true umbrella pram. He later found the company using his new design. The design took off and soon strollers were easier to transport and used everywhere.
